In English, the children will begin a unit on Newspapers and Magazines. They will be examining the key features of newspapers including broadsheets, tabloids, regional and local papers. They will revise the difference between fact and opinion and discuss bias and balance in journalistic writing. They will learn about key features of articles and the differences in style between broadsheet and tabloid articles. They will write their own articles and design their own front pages. The children will also work through a unit on magazines, understanding their audience and purpose. They will identify and understand what goes into a magazine, focusing on key areas of their choice. Finally, they will work on producing a magazine for the Junior school, planning the content, drafting, editing and publishing their work. The magazine should be ready for sale by the end of term!
In Maths, the children will continue to follow the Heinemann scheme of work, which follows the National Numeracy Strategy, beginning with work on properties of numbers and reasoning about numbers. They will recognize and extend number sequences, including triangular and square numbers. Recognise primes and find differences between positive and negative numbers. They will consolidate work on place value, ordering and rounding. The students will develop their mental calculation strategies for the four operations as well as practise written methods. They will develop their understanding of equivalence between fractions, decimals and percentages. The children will also look at time, reading timetables and understanding the different time zones around the world. The class will also work on aspects of data handling, including mean, mode and median. On Friday mornings, the children will undertake a Maths Investigation with Mrs Settle, during which time they will have the opportunity to solve mathematical problems individually and in small groups.
In I.P.C. (International Primary Curriculum) the children will cover a topic entitled Bridges. This unit is science-based and very practical. The children will learn about a range of bridge types including, beam, arch, truss, cable-stayed and suspension bridges. They will learn about strong shapes used in construction and build a range of bridges out of different materials and test them for strength. The children will examine the forces at play within structures, consolidating work on forces. They will look at the history of structural engineering, find out about famous engineers and undertake a project on a famous bridge of their choice.
In Science, children are looking at nutrition and fitness. They will begin with the components of a balanced diet, progressing to other elements of a healthy lifestyle and fitness.
In Spanish Arabian students will cover birthdays, months, numbers up to 31, days of the week, naming the objects in the classroom, the alphabet, and naming parts of a computer.
In French we will be learning vocabulary for sports and hobbies. At Home topic: describing the house, where we live, rooms in the house, places in town, describing the bedroom. Holidays Topic; talking about holidays and associated vocabulary.
In Latin, we are learning using the Minimus books, which are immensely popular at junior level and marry nicely with the Cambridge Latin Course.
We shall master some basic vocabulary, the present tense and take a crash course in Greek and Roman myths. The class is motivated and interested and so we are very much looking forward to a successful term.
Outdoor sports which is on Wednesdays is cricket for the first half of term. We will turn to tennis for the second half of term. Students are welcome to bring in their own rackets or bats if they wish to use them. Please ensure your child wears the correct shoes, being plimsolls or trainers. We may need to request that raincoats are in school to enable us to continue the lessons! Arabian are also doing archery on Thursdays until half-term and then swimming until the end of term.
In Art, we shall be moving on to looking at bridges, their construction, design and drawing.
ICT - We are investigating the different uses of information on the internet and how we can make sense of it in our lives. We will be looking at news report related to our subject topics and finding ways in which to present this information across different media.
Drama - This term we are focusing on improvisations using body / language / mime and voice. The improvisations will revolve around the children’s awareness of interactions and situations in their daily lives.
