Ionian

Dear Parents,

Please find below an outline of subjects to be covered this term with indicators of revision guidance for exam week
Our class text for the term is ‘Romeo and Juliet,’ which is one of Shakespeare’s most memorable, moving and accessible plays. We shall study the play as a tragedy, take a close look at the characters and the language and make a critical comparison of two excellent and very different film versions, directed by Franco Zeffirelli and Baz Luhrman. We are also continuing to polish our critical skills with a variety of poetry and comprehension exercises. Language work will include a study of the language of persuasion and of argument, and we shall debate, review, make presentations, write letters and essays.
Note from Mrs Parsons: Ionian have been working extremely hard. I am confident that their good work will have paid off in last week’s Checkpoint tests. The summer exam will consist of a comprehension test, a piece of narrative or descriptive writing and a question on ‘Romeo and Juliet.’

Maths
We will be looking at the following topics: Enlarging 2d shapes. Straight line graphs: plotting graphs and calculating the gradient. Solving simultaneous equations graphically. Percentages. Solving linear equations graphically and using algebra. Trigonometrical ratios and bearings.

Spanish
We intend to finish chapter six in Listos one text book, covering what you do in your free time. Conduct end of chapter exam on chapter six in the first half of the term. Second half of the term will be a quick review of chapters one to three of Listos One, covering personal introductions, describing families and school life. The June exam will be an overall exam covering chapters one to six of Listos One, in order to ensure they are ready to begin Listos three in September 08.

Science
We are covering Chemical patterns and models. We then plan to undertake a higher course in theoretical and practical chemistry relating to the elements properties and behaviours.

Geography
The focus this term is on Physical geography. Ice as an agent of erosion and change.

French
We will be covering La Mode Topic: Clothes, Shopping, Pocket Money, Teenage Issues. For grammar students need to revise present past and future tense.

ICT
This term’s aim is to seize control of the school website (!) and to learn how to author/maintain and create a dynamic, user friendly portal into the life within the International School. We will be looking at basic programming code, website design and creating media content. (Note from Dr Sturdy: no chance of seizing control!)

Filmmaking/Drama
We are still working on group films which the class are currently editing. Thereafter, the class will focus on two class drama film projects that will involve them as actors or crew.

Sport
Outdoor sports is on Wednesdays and is cricket for the first half of term. We will turn to tennis for the second half of term. Students are welcome to bring in their own rackets or bats if they wish to use them. Please ensure your child wears the correct shoes, being plimsolls or trainers. We may need to request that raincoats are in school to enable us to continue the lessons!

Swimming takes place on Thursdays and all pupils must wear goggles.

We have a week of exams in early June. We do expect children to revise work covered this year, but do not want them to become too anxious. The exams provide a useful indicator of progress for staff and for children and parents too. There will be no homework given for the week before half term until after the exams are over, but children must use this time to revise carefully.

If you have any queries or concerns about your child’s progress, please do not hesitate to contact me. Mrs Young is remaining in close contact with the school and I have regular meetings with her. She will be very happy (treatment permitting) to come into any meetings should you need to speak to her.

Please put a note in your diaries that we have Options Evening on May 13th in the evening. It is very important that all pupils and parents attend this as we will be outlining what IGCSE’s are available and you can find out a little more about the course requirements and syllabii.

I hope the children have an enjoyable summer term.

Yours sincerely.
